Certification & Disclosure Policy

Our commitment

We describe every item accurately, in plain language, and in writing. Where we know something, we say it. Where we do not know something, we say that too. We do not guess at treatment, origin or authenticity, and we do not let a buyer assume more than we have stated.

Natural and laboratory-grown

Every quotation, invoice and appraisal states whether a stone is natural or laboratory-grown. Laboratory-grown stones are never described using the name of a natural stone alone; the words laboratory-grown appear with the name.

If a stone has not been tested and we cannot confirm its nature, it is described as untested and priced accordingly, or not sold.

Treatments and enhancements

Many gemstones on the market are treated or enhanced. We disclose every treatment we are aware of, such as heating, clarity enhancement, fracture filling, irradiation, coating or dyeing, on the quotation and the invoice.

Where a treatment status is unknown, the item is described as treatment not determined. We do not describe a stone as untreated unless an independent laboratory report supports that description.

Origin

Geographic origin is stated only when it is supported by an independent laboratory report or by documentation from our supplier that we are willing to show you. Otherwise the item is described as origin not determined. We do not attach origin stories to stones.

Laboratory reports and certification

We do not issue laboratory grading reports. When a stone is accompanied by a report from an independent gemmological laboratory, we name the laboratory and quote the report number, and we provide the report or a copy with the stone.

A laboratory report is that laboratory's opinion on the date it was issued. If you would like a report where none exists, ask us; where it is practical, submission to an independent laboratory can be arranged at cost with your written agreement before the stone is sent.

Weights, measurements and grading

Carat weights of loose stones are measured and stated to two decimal places. Weights of mounted stones are estimated from measurements and are labelled as estimates.

Colour, clarity and cut descriptions made by us are our professional opinion and are labelled as such. They are not a substitute for an independent laboratory report.

Metals

Precious metal content is stated as marked on the item or as tested by us, and the description says which. Plated or filled items are described as plated or filled.

Watches

Brands and models available are subject to current stock. We are not an authorized dealer of any watch manufacturer unless we state so in writing for a specific brand.

We make no statement about a watch's authenticity, service history or condition until we have examined it. Statements are then made in writing, and any part that is not original is identified where we can identify it.

Appraisals

An appraisal is a written opinion of value for a stated purpose on a stated date. It describes the item, the basis of valuation and the purpose, and it is signed. It is not an offer to buy, and it is not a guarantee of any future sale price.

Pre-owned and consigned items

Items that have been previously owned are described as pre-owned, with their condition noted. Items we sell on consignment are described on the same basis as our own stock, and the disclosures above apply to them equally.

If we get something wrong

If we learn that a description we gave was incorrect, we tell the buyer promptly and offer a remedy, which may include correction of the documents, adjustment of price, or return and refund.
